Non-resident tourists arriving in Romania spent over 2,400 RON/person

In the first six months of 2018, non-resident tourists arriving in Romania spent, on average, 2,409.3 RON/person, according to INS data. On the other hand, in the second quarter of this year, the total number of non-residents staying in collective tourist accommodation structures was 793,000, and their expenses totaled 1.938 billion RON, with the main reason for their stay in Romania being business, participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs, and exhibitions, equivalent to 58.5% of the total number of non-resident tourists. At the same time, their expenses represented 60.1% of the total.

The second reason for the stay spent by non-residents in Romania during the analyzed period was private travel – 41.5% of the total number of non-resident tourists, with vacation travel standing out – 71.2%.

Also, of the total business expenses, the largest share is represented by accommodation expenses (52.8%), with accommodation including breakfast being particularly preferred (90.4%).

Non-resident tourists’ spending in restaurants and bars was 17%, while the amounts spent on shopping represented 11.7%.

Expenses for car rentals represented 48.6% of total transport expenses, and expenses for access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos, and mechanical game halls represented 43.4% of the total allocated for recreation.

According to the INS, of the total number of non-residents arriving in Romania, 49.2% organized their stay through travel agencies, and 34.1% organized their stay themselves.

The main means of transport used by non-resident tourists to arrive in Romania was the airplane, used by 79.6% of the total number of tourists. Private cars represented 10.8%, followed by coaches and buses with 7.8%, and other means 1.8%.
