Nearly 9.4 Million People Stayed in Romanian Tourist Establishments in the First 8 Months

Approximately 9.39 million people stayed in Romania’s tourist accommodation structures, including apartments and rooms for rent, in the first eight months of the year, a 12.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022, while the number of overnight stays reached 20.488 million, up by 11.6%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the cited source, between January 1 and August 31, 2023, foreign tourist arrivals accounted for 15% of the total reported nationally. Meanwhile, out of the total number of overnight stays, those of Romanian tourists represented 85.3%, while the remaining 14.7% were accounted for by foreign tourists.

By county, the number of tourist arrivals in accommodation establishments recorded higher values in: Constanța, with 1.347 million people, Bucharest, with 1.181 million, and Brașov, with 997,300. Tourist overnight stays in the same types of accommodation recorded higher values in the same cities: Constanța (4.518 million), Bucharest (2.347 million), and Brașov (1.902 million).

Furthermore, the highest number of arrivals of foreign tourists staying in accommodation structures, including apartments and rooms for rent, in the first eight months, came from Germany (148,000 people), Israel (120,200), and Italy (119,100).

On the other hand, at the end of August 2023, arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania recorded at border points reached 10.066 million people, a 19.3% increase compared to the period from January to August 2022.

In contrast, departures of Romanian visitors abroad reported at border points stood at 13.144 million people, 13.4% above the data recorded in the first eight months of 2022.

According to the INS, in August of this year, arrivals recorded in tourist accommodation structures, including apartments and rooms for rent, totaled two million people, up 3.9% compared to August 2022, while overnight stays were 5.041 million.

The average length of stay in August 2023 was 2.6 days for Romanian tourists and two days for foreign tourists.

At border points, 1.781 million foreign tourists were registered in August, an 18.9% increase year-on-year, while departures of Romanian visitors abroad totaled 2.120 million people, up 5.1% compared to August 2022.
