Mark Neville Farrugia, the owner of Malta Travel, stated that this year approximately 7,000 Romanians will spend their vacation in Malta, 2,000 more than in 2015. They will pay 2.5 million EUR for these stays, a 10% increase compared to the previous year.
The tour operator Malta Travel is the sole charter flight operator to this destination and accounts for 80% of tourist traffic from Romania to Malta.
Farrugia mentioned that the attacks affecting Turkey and North Africa in recent months, as well as the conflict in the Middle East, are prompting Romanians to give up vacations on the Aegean beaches in favor of Maltese destinations.
