Italian authorities offer free use of castles and other historic buildings to investors who can restore and introduce them into the tourism circuit

Italian authorities are offering more than 100 castles and other historic buildings for free use to investors who present concrete restoration plans to transform them into tourist attractions, as part of a government strategy aimed at boosting tourism in less-visited regions of Italy.
In total, 103 historic buildings owned by the state, including castles, former monasteries, schools, as well as forts and defense towers, will be offered at auction in the first half of the year, with another 200 structures to be included in the project over the next 2 years.
The “Cammini e Percorsi” project is aimed at companies, cooperatives, and associations formed mainly by people up to 40 years old, who will receive the buildings in free concession for periods of 9+9 years, but also at economic operators capable of transforming the assets into tourist attractions, in which case the state proposes leasing the buildings for periods of up to 50 years.
