Data published on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) show that in the first half of the year more than 965,000 foreign tourists visited Romania, their total spending reaching 3 bn.

According to the most recent statistics compiled by INS, a foreign tourist spent, on average, RON 3,100 in Romania in the first half of this year.
In terms of the reason for their visit, 55.7% of foreigners who arrived in Romania between January and June 2024 came for business purposes, their expenses accounting for 58.6% of the total, while over 44% came for private purposes, their expenses accounting for 41.4% of the total.
The statistics also show that 37.9% organized their trip through a travel agency, 35.7% organized their trip on their own, 18% opted for other ways of organizing their trip (e.g. through trade unions), while 8.4% organized their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.
The main means of transportation used to arrive in Romania was by air, used by 79.2% of all tourists, while 13.8% used their own cars, 5.7% used coaches and buses, 0.7% river boats, and 0.7% river boats, trains and other means of transportation (rented cars, motorcycles, etc.) with 0.3% each.
Between April and June, 586,300 foreigners stayed in Romania and spent 1.85 billion RON (on average 3156.9 RON/person).
Out of these, 53.6% traveled for business purposes, their expenses accounting for 57.2% of the total expenses.
Of the total business expenditure in the second quarter, the main share was spent on accommodation (52%), followed by expenditure in restaurants and bars (16.9%) and shopping (14%).
Private travelers accounted for 46.4% of the total, with their expenditure representing 42.8% of total expenditure.
Expenditure on accommodation accounted for 43.6% of total expenditure, followed by expenditure on shopping (15.3%) and expenditure in restaurants and bars (15.1%).
