According to the Global Destinations Cities Index 2016 study, published by Mastercard, this year over 1 million tourists chose Bucharest as a holiday destination, and the total expenditure recorded by them reaches approximately 270 million EUR.
In this context, Romania’s capital occupies the 81st position in this global ranking, while at the European level it ranks 8th among the destinations with the highest growth rate in the last 7 years, surpassing in this regard cities such as Barcelona, Dublin, Paris, Prague, or Rome.
According to the study, Bangkok is the highest-ranked city worldwide, with approximately 21.47 million international visitors in 2016, surpassing London, which occupies the 2nd place in the top.
The most overnight visitors in a city are found in London – 19.88 million visitors, followed by Paris – 18.03 million visitors, Dubai – 15.27 million, New York – 12.75 million, Singapore – 12.11 million, Kuala Lumpur – 12.02 million, Istanbul – 11.95 million, Tokyo – 11.70 million, and Seoul – 10.20 million.
Dubai is the capital that made the biggest leap in the 2016 Index regarding tourist spending, with a total of 28 billion EUR, surpassing London, whose total estimated volume is 17.7 billion EUR.
The MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index ranks cities based on the total number of international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending of these visitors in destination cities, providing growth forecasts for visitor and passenger numbers for 2016.
