Evolution of arrivals and overnight stays in September and the first nine months of 2019

Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in September 2019 totaled 1,312.5 thousand, an increase of 1.1% compared to those in September 2018. Of these, 78.1% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 21.9% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.

Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 75.4% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 85.7% were from countries belonging to the European Union.

Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in September 2019 totaled 3,027.9 thousand, an increase of 1.5% compared to those in September 2018. Of these, overnight stays of Romanian tourists represented 82.3%, and overnight stays of foreign tourists

represented 17.7%.

Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 73.6% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 85.9% were from countries belonging to the European Union.

The average length of stay in September 2019 was 2.4 days for Romanian tourists and 1.9 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in September 2019 was 37.7% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 0.8% compared to September 2018. Higher occupancy rates in September 2019 were recorded in hotels – 47.2%, accommodation spaces on ships – 41.1%, tourist villas – 31%, tourist guesthouses – 24.4%, hostels – 24%, bungalows and holiday villages, each with 23.3%, and agritourism guesthouses – 23.2%.

Arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, recorded at border points, were 1,180.3 thousand in September 2019, an increase of 10.3% compared to September 2018. Road and air transport means were the most used for arrivals from abroad, representing 73.9% and 23%, respectively, of the total number of arrivals.

Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, recorded at border points, were 2,244.8 thousand in

September 2019, an increase of 7.1% compared to September 2018.  Road and air transport means were the most used for departures abroad, representing 66.5% and 32.9%, respectively, of the total number of departures.

Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in the period January – September 2019 totaled 10,449.5 thousand, an increase of 4.4% compared to the first nine months of 2018. Of these, arrivals of Romanian tourists represented 79.8%, while foreign tourists represented 20.2%.

Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 74.4% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 84.9% were from countries belonging to the European Union.

Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in the period January – September 2019 totaled 23,902.0 thousand, an increase of 6% compared to those in the same period of 2018. Of these, overnight stays of Romanian tourists in the structures represented 82.8%, while overnight stays of foreign tourists represented 17.2%.

Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 72.1% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 84.3% were from countries belonging to the European Union.

The average length of stay in the period January – September 2019 was 2.4 days for Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in the analyzed period was 35.4% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 2.1% compared to the same period in 2018. Higher occupancy rates were recorded in hotels – 44%, bungalows – 33.2%, tourist villas – 29.7%, accommodation spaces on ships – 27.9%, hostels – 26.4%,

campsites – 24.5%, and tourist guesthouses – 23.1%.

By county, in the period January – September 2019, tourist arrivals in tourist reception structures with functions of recorded higher values in: Bucharest Municipality – 1,530.7 thousand, Constanta – 1,309.6 thousand, Brasov – 1,062.5 thousand, Cluj – 509.4 thousand, Mures – 466.8 thousand, and Prahova – 445.9 thousand, while tourist overnight stays recorded higher values in: Constanta – 4,981.8 thousand, Bucharest Municipality – 2,637.1 thousand, Brasov – 2,118.9 thousand, Bihor – 1,186.4 thousand, Valcea – 1,156.9 thousand, Prahova – 996.9 thousand, Cluj – 955.4 thousand, and Mures – 903.5 thousand.

The most arrivals of foreign tourists staying in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions came from Germany (239.3 thousand), Israel (180.6 thousand), Italy (170.2 thousand), U.S.A. (129.3 thousand), Hungary (128.1 thousand), France (122.7 thousand), and the United Kingdom (108.8 thousand).

Arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, recorded at border points, were 10,023.4 thousand in the first nine months of 2019, an increase of 10.2% compared to the same period last year. Road and air transport means were the most used for arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, representing 75.1% and 22.4%, respectively, of the total number of arrivals.

Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, recorded at border points, were 18,446 thousand in the analyzed period, an increase of 10% compared to the same period in 2018. Road and air transport means were the most used for departures abroad, representing 69.7% and 29.8%, respectively, of the total number of departures.
