Evolution of arrivals and overnight stays in November 2019 and the first 11 months of 2019

Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in Romania between January and November 2019 totaled 12.434 million, an increase of 3.7% compared to the same period last year, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics. Of these, 79.7% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 20.3% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.
Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 74.3% of the total foreign tourists, of which 84.4% were from European Union countries.
Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in Romania between January and November 2019 totaled 28.178 million, an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period in 2018. Of these, overnight stays by Romanian tourists represented 82.4%, while overnight stays by foreign tourists represented 17.6%.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 72.2% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 83.9% were from European Union countries.
The average length of stay in the first 11 months of 2019 was 2.3 days for Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of accommodation places was 34.8% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 1.7% compared to the first 11 months of the previous year. Higher occupancy rates were recorded in hotels (43.7%), bungalows (31.8%), tourist villas (28.5%), accommodation spaces on ships (27.3%), hostels (25.8%), campsites (23.5%), and tourist guesthouses (22.6%).
The most arrivals of foreign tourists staying in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions came from Germany (282,200), Israel (213,800), Italy (207,400), the USA (155,600), Hungary (149,300), France (146,500), and the United Kingdom (131,700).
At the same time, arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, recorded at border points, were 11.895 million in the period January – November 2019, an increase of 9.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Road and air transport were the most used for foreign visitor arrivals in Romania, representing 74.5% and 22.9%, respectively, of the total number of arrivals.
Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, recorded at border points, were 21.610 million, an increase of 9.5% compared to the same period in 2018. Road and air transport were the most used for departures abroad, representing 68.7% and 30.7%, respectively, of the total number of departures.
In November 2019, arrivals in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions in Romania decreased by 1.6% compared to November 2018, totaling 902,800 arrivals. Of these, arrivals of Romanian tourists represented 80.5%, while foreign tourists represented 19.5%.

Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in November 2019 totaled 1.924 million, a decrease of 1.8% compared to those in November 2018. Of these, 81.4% represented overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 18.6% represented overnight stays of foreign tourists.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 71.7% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 81.5% were from European Union countries.
The average length of stay in November 2019 was 2.2 days for Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in November 2019 was 29.6% for total tourist accommodation structures, a decrease of 0.4% compared to November 2018. Higher occupancy rates in November 2019 were recorded in hotels (39.2%), hostels (20.8%), tourist villas (19.6%), tourist guesthouses (19.1%), motels and bungalows (each with 14.5%), and agritourism guesthouses (14.4%).
