Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in May 2020 totaled 34.6 thousand, a decrease of 96.9% compared to those in May 2019. Of these, 96.2% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 3.8% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.


Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 76.9% of total foreign tourists, the vast majority being from European Union countries.


Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in May 2020 totaled 65.7 thousand, a decrease of 97% compared to those in May 2019. Of these, 93.9% represented overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 6.1% represented overnight stays of foreign tourists.

Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 55% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 59.1% were from European Union countries.


The average length of stay in May 2020 was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 3 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places was 6.9% for the total tourist accommodation structures, a decrease of 23.4% compared to May 2019.


Higher occupancy rates of accommodation places in May 2020 were recorded in motels (10.4%), tourist villas and tourist chalets (9% each), tourist pensions (8.5%), bungalows (7.5%), hostels (7.2%), and hotels (6.7%).


Foreign visitor arrivals in Romania, recorded at border points, were 196.1 thousand in May 2020, a decrease of 81.5% compared to May 2019. Road and sea transport were the most used for arrivals from abroad, representing 94.3% and 3.7%, respectively, of the total number of arrivals.


Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, recorded at border points, were 302 thousand in May 2020, a decrease of 83.9% compared to May 2019. Road and air transport were the most used for departures abroad, representing 88.8% and 10.3%, respectively, of the total number of departures.

Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in the period January – May 2020 totaled 1,814.2 thousand, a decrease of 57.9% compared to the same period in 2019. Of these, 84.3% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 15.7% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.


Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 4.2% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 71.7% were from European Union countries.


Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in the first five months of 2020 totaled 3,574.7 thousand, a decrease of 57.5% compared to those in the same period in 2019. Of these, 82.7% represented overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 17.3% represented overnight stays of foreign tourists.

Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 72.5% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 70.3% were from European Union countries.


The average length of stay in the first five months of 2020 was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.2 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in the analyzed period was 21.1% for the total tourist accommodation structures, a decrease of 5.4% compared to the same period in 2019.


Higher occupancy rates of accommodation places in the period January – May 2020 were recorded in hotels (25.6%), tourist villas (17.7%), hostels (17.5%), bungalows (16.3%), and tourist pensions (16.1%).


Foreign visitor arrivals in Romania, recorded at border points, were 2,315.4 thousand in the first five months, a decrease of 45.3% compared to the same period last year. Road and air transport were the most used for foreign visitor arrivals in Romania, representing 79.1% and 18.3%, respectively, of the total number of arrivals.
