According to data published by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), tourism in the European Union showed signs of recovery in the summer of 2021, after the sector was severely affected last year by the coronavirus pandemic.
The percentage of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union decreased by 20% in August 2021 compared to the same period in 2019, while in August 2020, a decline of 30% was recorded compared to August 2019.
These signs of recovery are also observed in July, when a decrease of 29% was recorded in 2021 and 40% in 2020, and in June, a decrease of 51% was recorded in 2021 and 70% in 2020.
During the July – August 2021 period, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments decreased in all EU member states compared to 2019. Decreases of over 25% were seen in 10 of the 24 member states for which data was available, while Romania recorded a 20% decline.
Compared to 2020, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments increased in almost all EU member states, with the only decline occurring in Latvia.
