The European Council’s historic decision on December 14, 2023, to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine was reached after many hours of discussions.
President Maia Sandu congratulated the citizens and stated that the Council’s decision marks a new chapter in the history of the Republic of Moldova.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that “the decision is a strategic one and a day that will remain engraved in the history of the Union.” Similarly, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis congratulated Chișinău and Kyiv and reiterated Romania’s support for Moldova’s European journey.
Furthermore, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Her Majesty Margareta, welcomed the opening of EU accession negotiations for Moldova, emphasizing that Romanians, wherever they may be, are Europeans.
It is one of nine current EU candidate countries, alongside Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
