Salina Turda is entering an extensive expansion and modernization process worth approximately EUR 24.05 million, funded predominantly through European funds. The project represents the most significant development stage in recent years and will increase the area accessible to visitors from one-third of a hectare to nearly one hectare.
According to the mayor of Turda, Cristian Matei, the design phase is underway. The project includes opening new galleries, creating an artificial salt river fed and recirculated with water from the mine, as well as installing five panoramic elevators. The technical solution was adapted due to the specific nature of the salt walls, abandoning the initial option of a single 16-person elevator in favor of smaller-capacity elevators.
Of the total budget, around EUR 1.53 million represents non-eligible expenses, with the remainder covered by EU funds. The works are estimated to be completed in 2029, with the possibility of finishing in 2028. During the interventions, the current tourist area will remain open, with the old and new sections to be connected via a tunnel at the end. The site attracts around 700,000 tourists annually, and authorities assure that water infiltration is monitored and managed through capture into the stormwater network.
