On February 15, MEPs approved the EU-Canada free trade agreement, CETA. Thus, 408 parliamentarians voted for the agreement, 254 against, and 33 abstained.
In October last year, the Romanian Government announced that, following the signing of the CETA treaty, Canada confirmed the lifting of visas for Romanian citizens in two stages.
From May 1, 2017, Romanian citizens who have held a temporary Canadian visa in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid visa for the United States will be able to visit or transit Canada based on an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a visa. Visas will be completely eliminated starting December 1, 2017.
After approval in the EP, a large part of CETA will be applied provisionally, starting in April, until its ratification by all national and regional Parliaments in the EU, which will take years.
