The National Road Investment Company (CNIR) has launched the tender for the design and execution of the link road between the A0 Bucharest North Motorway and the future Terminal 2 of the Henri Coandă-Otopeni International Airport. The project, with an estimated value of over €78.49 million, is strategic for airport infrastructure and the cargo area; however, the work schedule indicates the road’s completion in 2029, significantly ahead of the construction of the new terminal, which is still in the design procurement phase.
The new road connection will have a length of 2.55 km, and the completion period is set at 30 months for design and execution. The route starts at kilometer 29 of the A0 motorway through a “cloverleaf” interchange with 7.5 km of ramps and includes overpasses over DJ 200B and A0 North, as well as a roundabout for the connection with the town of Tunari. Gabriel Budescu, the general manager of CNIR, emphasized that the investment will reduce travel time from 20 minutes on the current network to just two minutes, while also facilitating freight transport. The documentation has already been submitted for validation to the National Agency for Public Procurement (ANAP).
In parallel, the Terminal 2 project is experiencing major administrative delays. Although the design tender, worth €40 million, attracted 9 bids in September last year, the contract has not yet been signed. The future terminal, with an area of 176,000 sqm, is sized for a traffic of 30 million passengers annually by 2040 and will include 48 new aircraft parking stands and 20 boarding bridges. Given that the actual execution is estimated at a minimum of 24 months after the design stage, experts consider the completion of the terminal by 2030 to be unlikely.
