By the end of October 2015, the rehabilitation project works for the Romanian coast in the Constanța area will be completed, announced Gheorghe Boeru, the president of the company executing the works.
The project “Protection and rehabilitation of the southern part of the Romanian Black Sea coast in the Constanța Municipality area”, with a total value of EUR 170,450,084, has a non-reimbursable financing of 85.49% through the European Union Cohesion Fund, with the remainder provided by the state budget. The project beneficiary is the Dobrogea-Litoral Water Basin Administration.
The project focused on the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and protection with surface and underwater dikes of the coastal strip and beaches in the following areas: Mamaia South, Tomis North, Tomis Center, Tomis South, and Eforie North.
According to the beneficiaries, the coastal erosion protection and tourist beach extension works through sand nourishment involved over 1 million cubic meters of stone for the sub-base and 12,000 concrete acropods for the 22 submerged and surface protection dikes, totaling 12,800 linear meters. To extend the beaches by 100m from the waterline over a length of more than 7.3 km, 3,477,442.47 cubic meters of sand were dredged from a depth of 25m in the Black Sea and transported to the shore.
The project’s goal is to reduce coastal erosion in the most high-risk areas of the Romanian Black Sea coast, protect the value of fixed assets, and increase the safety of homes and residents in the area. The final beneficiaries are considered to be the over 278,000 residents in the riparian area, 50,000 tourists, and 122 identified economic operators.
