Considered one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world, the Transfagarasan can currently be rented for filming or various other events at rates of only a few dozen euros.
Following complaints received from politicians, the press, or local authorities, the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) will analyze increasing the current rates, which have been charged until now even for filming featuring stars like Nicolas Cage or Jean Claude Van Damme and for shows such as Top Gear.
Currently, for renting a sector of the Transfagarasan for competitions, car races, or filming various materials, CNAIR charges a fee of 10 EUR/hour, plus a fee of 40 EUR/km for each kilometer of road closed for this purpose.
Politicians, the press, and other institutions or authorities have complained that the rates are derisory compared to the media projects filmed on this national road or the inconvenience caused to tourists following the road’s closure.
Additionally, the Transfagarasan is periodically closed for the production of photo and video materials. According to the local press, last year CNAIR did not collect more than a few thousand euros from renting the Transfagarasan for such events.
