Caraiman Cross Rehabilitation Works to Begin in 2018

In the spring of next year, the rehabilitation of the Cross on the Caraiman Massif will most likely begin, officials from the Ministry of National Defense announced. The works are expected to be completed the following year, with the project also planning the arrangement of a modern exhibition within the monument’s spaces, where digitized information will predominate, possibly with holograms, sound systems, and other information facilities.
The total value of the project amounts to approximately 19.3 million RON.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense, Codrin Munteanu, specified that after the approval of the financing request, the signing of the financing contract for the project’s implementation will follow.
The project’s financing request was submitted to the evaluating agency on August 24, 2016, and has already been declared eligible.
The total value of the project is approximately 19.3 million RON, of which approximately 16.4 million RON represents the value of non-reimbursable external financing, and nearly 2.9 million RON represents the value of the co-financing of eligible expenses provided by the MoND.
To carry out the restoration of the monument, the Ministry of Defense concluded a collaboration protocol with the National Heritage Institute.
According to the MoND press release, the necessary documentation has been prepared and environmental permits and approvals from the Ministry of Culture and National Identity have been obtained, and the technical documentation for obtaining the building permit has already been submitted to the Bușteni City Hall, with its issuance estimated for April.
„The technical project and the exhibition plan, in agreement with the specialists from the National Heritage Institute, are to be approved by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity by June 2017 at the latest," the cited source also shows.
The Heroes’ Monument Caraiman Cross is located at an altitude of 2,291 m and has a total height of 39.3 m and a horizontal arm span of approximately 15 m.
In 2013, the cross was declared the tallest cross in the world located on a mountain peak in the Guinness World Records.
