Romania’s capital ranks 81st among the world’s 132 most visited cities and has climbed one position to 28th at the European level, according to the annual MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index (GDCI).
According to the study, Bucharest will be visited by 1.02 million foreign tourists this year, a 5.2% increase compared to 2014. Their spending is estimated at $287 million, 2.4% more than the previous year. On average, a visitor spent $281 in Bucharest last year.
First place in the ranking is held, for the fifth time in 7 years, by London. This year, it is estimated that London will receive 18.82 million international visitors.

The MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index ranks cities based on the total number of international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending of these visitors in the destination cities, providing growth forecasts for visitor and passenger numbers for 2015. Public data is used to determine the number of international visitors and cross-border spending in each of the 132 destination cities, using specially designed algorithms; particular attention is paid to eliminating hub effects for destinations such as Singapore, Dubai, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt.
