Blue Air: 70% Increase in Passenger Numbers in 2017

Low-cost airline Blue Air transported 5,061,790 passengers last year, 70% more than the previous year and exceeding initial estimates.

The increase in passenger numbers is due to the fact that, in 2017, Blue Air continued to expand, increased the number of domestic routes, their frequency, and direct connections between the seaside and some of Romania’s major cities.

In December 2017, Blue Air General Manager Gheorghe Racaru estimated a 10% increase in turnover and passenger numbers for 2018, from EUR 400 million and 5 million passengers in 2017.

In 2017, the Constanta base was opened, operating 506 flights to Rome, Brussels, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Oradea, Paris Beauvais, and Timisoara.

At the same time, from Iasi, routes were inaugurated last year to Turin, Valencia, Munich, Milan Bergamo, Florence, and Glasgow, while from Cluj-Napoca, new routes were launched to London, Larnaca, Nice, and Tel Aviv.

From Bucharest, flights were inaugurated last year to: Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Bordeaux, Oslo, Helsinki.

Additionally, the company ordered 12 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft last year, with the new planes set to join the fleet starting in the summer of 2019.
