Arrivals and overnight stays in Romania’s tourist accommodation structures increased in 2016

Arrivals recorded in tourist accommodation structures in December 2016 totaled 709.4 thousand, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. Of the total number of arrivals, domestic tourist arrivals accounted for 79.9% in December, while foreign tourists represented 20.1%.
Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist accommodation structures, those from Europe held the largest share—72.5% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 83.5% were from European Union countries.
Overnight stays recorded in tourist accommodation structures in December 2016 totaled 1,426.2 thousand, an increase of 7% compared to those in December 2015. Of these, 80.5% represented overnight stays by Romanian tourists and 19.5% represented overnight stays by foreign tourists.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist accommodation structures, those from Europe held the largest share—72.7% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 83.8% were from European Union countries.
The average length of stay in December 2016 was 2 days for both Romanian and foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in December 2016 was 23% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 1.2% compared to December 2015.

Among the European Union states, the most arrivals were recorded from Bulgaria – 31.1%, Hungary – 27.4%, Italy – 9.4%, Germany – 7.3%, Poland and France – with 3.6% each.
Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, recorded at border points, were 1,112.3 thousand in December 2016, an increase of 5.6% compared to December 2015. Road transport means were the most used for departures abroad, representing 67% of the total number of departures.
