The Tâmpa cable car is being modernized

The Tâmpa cable car is entering a modernization process that is estimated to last until next spring, Brasov City Hall has announced. The cable car in Brasov was built more than 50 years ago, being put into service in August 1970, and since then it has been in permanent operation without major interventions, the source said. The particularity of the cableway on the Tâmpa is that the transportation line has no poles to support the cables between the two stations of the installation. “Until now, the installation has been working very well and it worked from 8 am to midnight, a period when the Panoramic Restaurant was open. Now it runs 8-10 hours a day. It’s about to be completely modernized. All the parts will be changed, all the motors, the cable, everything will be new,” explained Panait Iosif, the head of the Tâmpa cableway. The works entail the complete replacement of the old installation with a state-of-the-art cable transportation line, keeping the route and stations. The new installation will provide access facilities for all categories of tourists, including those with reduced mobility, and the capacity of the cableway will be increased to a maximum of 450 persons/hour. The works will be carried out by the Austrian-Swiss constructor Doppelmayr-Garaventa and are fully supported by the private operator of the cableway, Ana Teleferic. According to Ana Teleferic’s owner, George Copos, the investment amounts to €11 million and also concerns the modernization of the Panoramic Restaurant, which belongs to Ana Hotels.
