Romania will sign a \u20ac630 million financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB), through the Ministry of Finance, to co-finance the rehabilitation of the Bra\u0219ov-Sighi\u0219oara railway line. The loan will help cover the national state budget contribution required to execute the railway infrastructure project, approved by the bank’s Board of Directors in December 2025.<\/p>\n
The modernization project for the 112.55 km Bra\u0219ov-Sighi\u0219oara railway section is valued by the EIB at \u20ac2.25 billion (VAT included) and will allow trains to operate at a maximum speed of 160 km\/h. The execution works, which began in 2020, have an estimated completion date of 2029. Until the end of 2024, the investment was financed from non-reimbursable external funds through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) with an allocation of \u20ac389.55 million. Subsequently, at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the European Commission approved the project’s inclusion in the Transport Programme 2021-2027 under the military mobility priority, from which non-reimbursable funding of \u20ac705.95 million is estimated, with the difference covered by the national budget. The loan granted by the EIB will be disbursed in a maximum of 12 tranches of at least \u20ac50 million each over a 3-year period from signing, with a maturity of up to 27 years for installment repayments or 16 years for a bullet payment. This facility is part of a broader financial framework of up to \u20ac4.975 billion, approved by the Government in December 2024 to support major projects under the Transport Programme, from which two contracts of \u20ac500 million each have already been signed for the A1 Sibiu-Pite\u0219ti motorway.<\/p>\n
