The organization urges shifting key performance indicators from the gross volume of visitor arrivals to resident satisfaction, equitable economic distribution, and long-term resilience of local communities.

The new WTTC strategic framework establishes seven fundamental principles of responsible stewardship: joint planning, measuring success through resident satisfaction, planning ahead, understanding issues, geographic and seasonal diversification, transforming tourism into shared prosperity, and preparing for rapid response. Tourism remains a central pillar of the global economy, generating approximately 10% of global GDP, supporting 1 in 10 jobs, and holding the prospect of creating 1 in 3 new jobs over the next decade. In 2025 alone, the sector contributed EUR 10.18 trillion to the global economy and supported 366 million jobs worldwide.

The report exemplifies the application of these principles through models from various destinations: Madrid (decentralization and public-private governance), Colorado (participatory planning), Bogotá (data investment), Dubrovnik (smart cruise ship management), New York City (regional tourism), and the Balearic Islands (transparent revenue reinvestment). Similar initiatives are highlighted in Copenhagen, Japan, Ljubljana, and South Korea. Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, emphasized that responsible stewardship succeeds when governments, local communities, and the private sector work together under a shared vision. For the current season, the report also proposes immediate actions, such as monitoring resident sentiment, promoting lesser-known destinations, and effectively managing tourism pressure points.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the “Destination Stewardship” policy framework launched by the WTTC?

It is a policy document that proposes redefining success in tourism by shifting key performance indicators from raw visitor volume to resident satisfaction and sustainable community resilience.

What are the key principles of responsible stewardship outlined by the WTTC?

The seven principles include joint planning, measuring success via resident satisfaction, planning ahead, understanding issues, geographic and seasonal diversification, shared prosperity, and rapid response readiness.

What is the economic impact of global tourism according to the WTTC?

Tourism accounts for approximately 10% of global GDP, supports 1 in 10 jobs worldwide, and is projected to create 1 in 3 new jobs over the coming decade.

WTTC: New principles for sustainable tourism The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched its new policy document, “Destination Stewardship: Creating Value for All,” proposing a redefinition of success in the tourism sector.
