Although there was a slight decrease of nearly 4% compared to 2024, the average annual growth of approximately 12% over the last decade represents the fastest pace in the European Union, with the positive trend continuing in the first quarter of 2026 with an increase of over 8%.

The United States of America became the main source market for Romanian tourism in 2025, with record spending of EUR 554 million, surpassing Germany (EUR 546 million), Great Britain (EUR 518 million), and Italy (EUR 463 million). Together, these visitors generated nearly EUR 2 billion, representing about 40% of the total. Additionally, Japanese tourists recorded a remarkable evolution, with their spending being 13 times higher compared to 2016. Raluca Buciuc, Director and Partner at Colliers, highlights that Romania is increasingly perceived as an affordable and less crowded destination, with leisure tourism currently being the main driver.

Although the growth rate between 2016 and 2025 significantly outpaced developments in neighboring countries such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, or Poland (which grew by 3%-5% annually), Romania remains a relatively small market in terms of total revenue size. The current level only slightly exceeds Bulgaria, while Hungary and the Czech Republic attract EUR 8-9 billion annually, and Poland reaches nearly EUR 14 billion. This difference highlights a high growth potential that can be leveraged by strengthening international promotion and investing in infrastructure.

Against this backdrop, the local hotel market is expanding rapidly. By the end of the decade, Romania could add over 5,000 hotel rooms, representing an increase of approximately 5% in total existing capacity. This expansion targets the premium 4- and 5-star segment, which currently holds around 42,000 rooms, and will attract new international brands to the local market, such as The Hoxton, Hyatt, Kempinski, Hotel Indigo, AC Hotels by Marriott, The Crest Collection, and The Julius. In the medium and long term, international tourism is shaping up as an essential pillar for supporting the hotel industry, protecting it from potential declines in domestic demand caused by inflation and consumer caution.

Globally, Colliers operates in real estate services, engineering, and investment management, recording annual revenues of EUR 4.91 billion and managing assets of EUR 93.9 billion, with a team of 24,000 professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country was the main source market for Romanian tourism in 2025?

The United States of America became the main source market, with record spending of EUR 554 million.

How much did foreign tourists spend in Romania in 2025?

Foreign tourists spent over EUR 5 billion in Romania in 2025, marking a 2.8-fold increase compared to 2016.

How is the Romanian hotel market expected to grow by the end of the decade?

Romania is expected to add over 5,000 premium hotel rooms, representing a 5% increase in total capacity and attracting several new international brands.

Foreign tourists’ spending in Romania exceeded the EUR 5 billion threshold in 2025, marking an increase of nearly 2.8 times compared to the 2016 level, according to a Colliers analysis based on Eurostat data.
