The experimental initiative aims to create natural shade areas, stabilize the sand, and improve the microclimate affected by wind and high summer temperatures.

The project is implemented in partnership with the National Forest Guard and the “Apele Române” National Administration (ABA Dobrogea-Litoral), benefiting from the technical support of Romsilva and the specialized assistance of forestry authorities from Greece. Technical preparation started in March 2026, and field work will begin in the immediate following period, after obtaining the final approval of the technical analysis commission.

The technical concept provides for the creation of two or three L-shaped plant structures, located in the upper area of the beach, outside the direct action area of the waves. The long arm will be parallel to the shore, and the short one oriented towards the sea, a structure designed to reduce wind speed and capture wind-blown sand. In this pilot phase, 220 young saplings, 2–3 years old, grown in containers, will be planted. Among the species used are Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), stone pine (Pinus pinea), Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), Tamarix spp., and Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), sourced from Romsilva nurseries and external acquisitions of material adapted to coastal conditions.

Diana Buzoianu, Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, stated that the measure offers natural solutions for quality tourism, providing tourists with shaded recreation areas at no extra cost. Elena Tudose, State Secretary within MMAP, added that these alignments will be monitored for five years to assess the species’ adaptability and resistance to wind and salinity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the forest belts on Mamaia Nord beaches?

The project aims to create natural shade, stabilize sand, and improve the microclimate by reducing wind speed and summer heat on the widened beaches.

Which tree species are being planted in this pilot project?

The project uses container-grown saplings of Aleppo pine, stone pine, Austrian pine, Tamarix, and Russian olive, which are adapted to coastal conditions.

How long will the project and its monitoring last?

The pilot project is scheduled for 2026–2031, and the planted alignments will be monitored for five years to evaluate their adaptation and resistance.

The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MMAP) is launching a pilot project for planting forest belts on the widened beaches in the Mamaia Nord–Năvodari area, planned to take place between 2026 and 2031.
