The Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism (MEDAT) supports this process through a €10 million funding unlocked from the NRRP, intended for the operationalization of OMDs at the national level, with projects open for submission starting April 15.

During the eighth edition of the FOCUS Bucharest conference, Alin Grigore, Director General within MEDAT, emphasized that the initiative to establish OMD Bucharest has been unlocked, and its rapid operationalization is desired. The NRRP funds, totaling €10 million, are allocated as non-reimbursable grants excluding VAT, capped at €300,000 for communes, €125,000 for towns and municipalities (excluding county seats), and €100,000 for county seat municipalities and county administrative entities.

In addition to the operationalization funds, the state budget for tourism promotion increased this year to €4.8 million, double the €2.4 million recorded in the previous year. However, the MEDAT official pointed out that these amounts remain low compared to the budgets of direct competitor countries at European and global levels. In this context, the ministry’s main priority is improving the incoming policy, with active promotion currently taking place at specialized fairs in Frankfurt and Shanghai.

MEDAT also plans other structural reforms, including the implementation of the digital accommodation form, updating the legislation regarding tourist guides, and revising the classification criteria for accommodation units. These measures aim to capitalize on Romania’s tourism assets, focused on recreation, discovery, and authenticity, which stimulate the HoReCa sector and related services.

The FOCUS Bucharest conference, organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bucharest, brought together public administration officials and private sector leaders. The 2026 edition, dedicated to urban tourism, infrastructure, and historical heritage, included debates attended by the Capital’s Deputy Mayor, Stelian Bujduveanu, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Culture, Diana-Ștefana Baciuna, as well as representatives of INP, STB, FIHR, and ANAT.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OMD Bucharest and why is its operationalization urgent?

OMD Bucharest is the Destination Management Organization for Romania’s capital.
