The initiative, announced by Minister Irinel Darău, aims to modernize operating rules, simplify control procedures, and adapt the professional status of guides to current industry standards.

Among the most important changes is the replacement of the cardboard badges used since 2001 with modern cards equipped with a QR code, designed to simplify checks and eliminate bureaucracy. Additionally, professional categories will be renamed for greater clarity: ‘local guide’ becomes ‘domestic guide’, and ‘national guide’ is transformed into ‘international guide’. The project removes access barriers for non-EU citizens with the right to work in Romania, allowing them to practice after completing qualification courses. At the same time, an update of the sanctions system is being prepared, given that current fines are outdated, being expressed in millions of old lei. Currently, nearly 9,000 tour guides are active in Romania, with over 400 of them certified during this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main changes for Romanian tour guides?

The main changes include replacing cardboard badges with QR-coded cards, renaming professional categories, allowing non-EU citizens with work rights to practice, and updating outdated fines.

How will the professional categories of tour guides change?

The ‘local guide’ category will be renamed to ‘domestic guide’, while the ‘national guide’ category will become ‘international guide’.

How many active tour guides are there in Romania?

There are currently nearly 9,000 active tour guides in Romania, with over 400 of them certified during this year.

The Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism has launched a public consultation on a new set of regulations aimed at reforming and digitalizing the tour guide profession, marking the first major changes in this sector in over 20 years.
