This distinction marks a paradigm shift in Romania’s regional development, transforming culinary heritage from a lifestyle element into an economic strategy to attract investment and international tourist flows. Following the successful model of Sibiu (2019) and in anticipation of Harghita holding the title (2027), Banat is counting on a mix of multiculturalism, unaltered rural traditions, and Central European influences to stimulate the economic growth of the area.

The region’s development strategy is based on the global trend of experiential tourism, where local identity becomes the main driver for attracting visitors. According to data from other European regions awarded by IGCAT, the economic impact is significant: Slovenia recorded an increase in the number of tourists from 4 million in 2021 to 5.9 million in 2022, with a direct contribution to GDP of EUR 2.9 billion. Additionally, Sicily reported an 11.9% increase in tourist arrivals in the first eight months of 2025, exceeding the threshold of 22.5 million overnight stays. In Romania, alongside the path of Banat and Harghita, Dobrogea county has already signed a partnership to collaborate within this European program.

For Banat, obtaining this title is projected to generate major effects over the next five years, including attracting new private investments in HoReCa, revitalizing small artisanal producers, and developing gastronomic and wine routes. Benefiting from Timișoara’s infrastructure and cross-border connectivity with Serbia and Hungary, the region aims to transform gastronomy into an economic infrastructure that includes local markets, culinary schools, and international festivals. This development model aims to increase the average length of stay and tourist spending, consolidating the regional “Banat” brand as the gastronomic gateway to the west of the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the European Region of Gastronomy title?

It is a prestigious European distinction awarded to regions that successfully integrate culinary heritage into their economic development and tourism strategies.

When will Banat hold this title?

The Banat region has officially obtained the title for the year 2028, following Harghita in 2027 and Sibiu in 2019.

What are the expected economic benefits for Banat?

The title is projected to attract private HoReCa investments, revitalize local artisanal producers, develop wine routes, and increase tourist stays and spending.

The Banat region has officially obtained the title of “European Region of Gastronomy 2028”, with the project being officially presented at the IBTM World Barcelona international trade fair.
