According to data provided by Corina Martin, president of the Resto Constanța Employers’ Association and general secretary of the Federation of Hospitality Industry Employers in Romania (FPIOR), the tourism industry is going through a critical period, influenced by fiscal pressures and changes in policies regarding extra-salary benefits.

According to the AGERPRES report, the main obstacles affecting the industry are the increase in VAT and taxes, along with the halving of the value of holiday vouchers, a measure that has drastically reduced the number of tourists nationwide. On the coast, the situation is aggravated by the shortening of the summer season to just over two months, a fact that jeopardizes the profitability of operators. Another major impact factor is the loss of the Sunwaves electronic music festival, which annually attracted at least 15,000 tourists and whose organizers chose Bulgaria over Romania. At the same time, unfavorable weather forecasts and the decrease in purchasing power have led many consumers to cancel their travel plans.

Mamaia and Vama Veche remain at the top of preferences, followed by Mamaia North and Eforie. In Eforie, accommodation units with spa facilities, water centers, and indoor pools report a good occupancy rate, being less dependent on climatic conditions. For the mentioned period, gastronomic festivals, car parades, and club events are scheduled, with security being coordinated in collaboration with the Constanța County Police Inspectorate (IPJ). In an attempt to balance demand, hoteliers and travel agencies have launched last-minute offers in recent days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a 50% drop in tourists on the Romanian coast in 2026?

The decline is driven by increased taxes, a 50% reduction in holiday voucher values, the loss of major events like Sunwaves to Bulgaria, and unfavorable weather forecasts.

Which resorts remain the most popular despite the decline?

Mamaia and Vama Veche continue to lead tourist preferences, followed by Mamaia North and Eforie, especially those with indoor spa facilities.

How are operators responding to the low demand?

Hoteliers and travel agencies are launching last-minute offers and organizing specialized events like gastronomic festivals and car parades to attract visitors.

Litoral 2026: 50% Decrease in the Number of Tourists The Romanian seaside anticipates a season start marked by a significant decline, with an estimate of 40,000-45,000 tourists for the May 1-3, 2026 weekend, representing a 50% decrease compared to previous years.
