The current priority of the county administration is to ensure a fast and comfortable connection for passengers of the Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport by directly integrating the railway infrastructure with the airport terminal.

The project provides for the construction of a covered pedestrian corridor that will connect the future railway platform and the airport terminal, ensuring protection against the elements. The investment for this facility is preliminarily estimated at approximately 52.1 thousand EUR (excluding VAT), complemented by an allocation of 10.7 thousand EUR for landscaping in the vicinity of the platform. Although the entire Metropolitan Train project is valued at over 200 million EUR, being mostly supported by European funds from the 2021–2027 Transport Program, the Brașov County Council has chosen to finance these first works from its own budget to increase the speed of execution. The allocation of local funds is conditioned by the presentation of a clear work schedule and the inclusion of costs within the limit of 40% of the project’s total ineligible expenses. The mobility plan targets three key mainlines: Stupini – Brașov Station, Codlea – Sfântu Gheorghe (the axis serving the airport), and Zărnești – Dârste, including the modernization of existing stations and the acquisition of state-of-the-art trains.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the first investments for the Brașov Metropolitan Train be completed?

The first specific investments, particularly those connecting the airport to the rail network, are scheduled for completion in 2026.

How will the airport terminal be connected to the train station?

A covered pedestrian corridor will be built to link the future railway platform directly to the Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport terminal.

How is the Metropolitan Train project being funded?

While the total project exceeds 200 million EUR and is primarily funded by the EU, the initial airport-related works are being financed by the Brașov County Council’s local budget.

The Brașov County Council, under the leadership of President Adrian Veștea, is accelerating the implementation of the Metropolitan Train project, aiming to complete the first specific investments during 2026.
