Minister Irineu Darău emphasized that participating in this fifth edition of the contest represents a strategic opportunity for rural communities to attract investment and gain visibility on the global tourism market.

Applications are open until May 4, with eight domestic destinations to be selected for the international stage. Eligible localities must have a maximum population of 15,000 inhabitants and demonstrate a firm commitment to preserving traditional activities and local community values. The evaluation process is based on rigorous criteria, including economic, social, and environmental sustainability, the quality of infrastructure and connectivity, as well as tourism governance at the local level. Destinations can receive the official “Best Tourism Village” title or be included in the Upgrade Program, which provides technical support to address identified development deficiencies.

To date, Romania has recorded consistent success in the competition: the commune of Rășinari (Sibiu) was designated “Best Tourism Village” in 2022, while the localities of Ciocănești (2023), Breb, and Polovragi (2024) were included in the Upgrade Program.
