For this reason, the Prime Minister has promised to reduce this type of mass tourism in Greece, which has developed over the last few decades. All-inclusive tourism brings Greece annual revenues of EUR 2 billion.

The government could ban the sale of state-owned land to developers of mega-tourist complexes and could amend the legislation regarding value-added tax, meaning that current holiday centers would face higher taxes.

The new government regime does not want to completely ban the all-inclusive system, but rather to encourage the traditional holiday model, where visitors use traditional bars, restaurants, and local attractions.

All-inclusive services are popular for families with a limited budget who know that once they pay for the tickets, they no longer incur additional expenses for food, drinks, and entertainment. However, this system is a disaster for local merchants and restaurant owners, because tourists no longer leave the hotel premises.

The spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents warned, however, that the Greek government must consider the cost of any restrictions. The popularity of all-inclusive holidays continues to grow, especially among families, and the Greeks must take into account that they could lose this market segment to other countries, such as Turkey and Egypt.

Andreas Andreadis, president of the Greek Tourism Confederation, warned that increasing taxes in tourism would be “like suicide” for Greece.

The Greek National Tourism Organization expressed its hope that the new government will act responsibly.

Source: Mediafax

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Greek government want to reduce all-inclusive tourism?

The government believes all-inclusive resorts isolate tourists from the local economy, negatively impacting small businesses and traditional establishments.

What measures are being considered to limit mass tourism?

Proposed measures include banning the sale of state land for mega-resorts and increasing VAT for existing all-inclusive holiday centers.

What are the risks of these policy changes?

Industry experts warn that higher taxes and restrictions could drive budget-conscious families to competing destinations like Turkey and Egypt.

Greek Prime Minister wants to encourage traditional tourism and reduce all-inclusive tourism The new Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, believes that all-inclusive services distance tourists from the local economy, keeping them within hotel premises and away from small businesses.
