During the press conference, we learned from Mr. Bogdan Dogariu, Executive Manager of the Dentotal Group, and later from his father, Mr. Anghel Dogariu, during the opening speech, that this hotel is an investment made through step-by-step decisions. It began with the acquisition of a plot of land with an excellent location on George Enescu Street near the Romanian Athenaeum, followed by an intuition regarding the growth of hotel demand\u2014an intuition confirmed by commissioning a pre-feasibility and later a feasibility study from Mr. Alexandru-Sorin Ionescu, founder and director of Fivestar Hospitality.<\/p>\n

Mr. Bogdan Dogariu stated that this industry is a seductive one for everyone, an industry of relaxation and happiness, because we all go on vacations, live different tourist experiences, and experiment with so many hotel concepts. He then thanked his family first\u2014his parents, his wife, and his sister Daniela Giroveanu\u2014and then listed the team of specialists who contributed to the hotel’s market debut: Fivestar Hospitality for assistance from the idea stage to negotiations with several hotel chains and the signing of the management contract with Accor\/Orbis; Mr. Luc Gesvret, who was the lead negotiator for the Accor chain; Alina Fugaciu for the effort put in during the pre- and post-opening period; the financing bank Garanti Bank and Ms. Carmen Badulescu; architect George Mihalache from Arhi Grup; the builder CONARG; the project manager VITALIS Consulting; and all the suppliers who contributed to equipping the Mercure Bucharest City Center, mentioning that he strove to choose as many Romanian manufacturers as possible.<\/p>\n

In response to journalists’ questions, the owner revealed that the entire project cost ~9 million EUR, including the land for a 114-room hotel. Bank financing accounts for 65% of the project’s value, and an investment recovery is expected within 8 to 10 years. Accor\/Orbis representatives, Mr. Frank Reul – Area General Manager for Romania, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, as well as Alina Fugaciu – General Manager of the hotel, further stated that operational targets for the first year are ambitious. They expect 65% of overnight stays to come from the business segment and 35% from the leisure segment, which has been growing steadily over the last two years\u2014a signal that Bucharest is beginning to successfully capitalize on weekends through city break programs.<\/p>\n

At the reception organized on the evening of March 24, 2015, attendees included Mr. Laurent Picheral, CEO of Accor HotelServices Germany, Poland, and Central Europe; Mr. Gilles Clavie, President and CEO of Orbis; representatives of the capital’s city hall; and the French Embassy. Partnerships were also announced with the organizer of the George Enescu Festival, the company Artexim, as well as with the SoNoRo festival. Guests were delighted to listen to a musical program by Irina Sarbu & Band.<\/p>\n

Laurent Picheral, CEO of Hotel Services in the Accor Group, responsible for markets in Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, Central Europe, Scandinavia, and the Balkans, stated that there is a very high interest from the Accor chain in Romania, citing the Renault success story often discussed in Paris, where Romania is seen in an “El Dorado” type of light. Accor aims to become number 1 in Romania in the hotel sector within the next 5 years. Gilles Clavie, CEO of the Polish hotel group Orbis, stated in turn that „The Romanian market is still dominated by local chains and independent hotels, which means there is plenty of room for international brands. We want to develop our network to 10-12 units. There are cities here where it makes sense to have franchised hotels." <\/p>\n
