A real estate investor, Victor Olaru, who owns land in the capital’s center near Piata Amzei, has held discussions with the Marriott and InterContinental chains for the Courtyard and Holiday Inn brands, respectively, with a view to building a hotel, according to tourism market sources. Contacted by Profit.ro, Olaru confirms that discussions took place, but says he is also considering another real estate project as an alternative to the hotel, which he is no longer absolutely certain he will build on that site.<\/div>\n

“I discussed, I didn’t negotiate with anyone. Unfortunately, I dealt with some who weren’t professional. There were discussions with several, including Accor and others,” said Victor Olaru. Tourism market sources, however, speak of a four-star hotel project with over 100 rooms, for which the investor is discussing with the Marriott and InterContinental chains for the Courtyard and Holiday Inn brands.<\/div>\n

Olaru maintains that he doesn’t know if he will still build a hotel on that land and will decide in a few months. “For now, I haven’t made any clear decision,” he added. Olaru stated that work on the diaphragm walls will begin for now. “We’ll dig the hole, then decide,” he said, though several tourism investors say that once work begins, the owner must already know what is to be built.<\/div>\n

Asked what he refers to when he says he "had a bad experience" with those who discussed with the hotel chains, Olaru gave two examples. "If you go to a restaurant and order potatoes, and instead you get bean soup with dirt in it, is that a good or bad experience? Or if you go on a trip and stay at a four-star guesthouse, you expect to at least have a bed in the room. But if you go there and have a mattress, is that a good experience?"<\/div>\n
