However, taken cumulatively (Easter and May 1st), the number of tourists will drop by nearly half.

It is estimated that around 115,000 tourists will visit hotels and guesthouses across the country for Easter and May 1st, spending over EUR 14 million.

According to FPTR data, in 2015, nearly 100,000 Romanian tourists visited domestic resorts during the May 1st mini-break, spending approximately EUR 12.5 million. Of these, around 40,000 stayed in guesthouses, 25,000 at the seaside, and the rest in mountain, spa resorts, or various cities.

For Easter 2015, hotels and guesthouses received 105,000 tourists who spent about EUR 7 million on accommodation and meals. Most Romanians chose guesthouses (65,000) and mountain resorts (22,000 people).

Thus, while last year tourists spent a cumulative EUR 19.5 million in resorts for Easter and May 1st, this year, with the two holidays coinciding, spending will drop to approximately EUR 14.5 million, according to FPTR.

Raducan estimates that for May 1st/Easter, the seaside will rival spa resorts for the top spot among destinations attracting tourists on this occasion.

Furthermore, Raducan estimates that of the approximately 13,000 Romanians who traveled abroad for mini-breaks last year for Easter and May 1st, less than half will do so this year. This is not only because the two holidays coincide but also because some tourists are reluctant to go on city breaks following the terrorist attacks in Paris, Istanbul, and Brussels.

Source: Profit

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the overlap of Easter and May 1st affect Romanian tourism?

Because the two holidays coincide, the total number of tourists and cumulative revenues are expected to drop by nearly 50% compared to the previous year when the holidays were separate.

What are the revenue projections for this holiday period?

FPTR estimates that tourists will spend approximately EUR 14.5 million, a significant decrease from the EUR 19.5 million spent cumulatively in 2015.

Why is there a decline in outbound tourism for these holidays?

The decline is caused by both the holiday overlap and tourists’ reluctance to go on city breaks following terrorist attacks in major European cities.

This year, Easter and May 1st coincide, and the number of tourists visiting resorts will be, according to hoteliers, higher than for each holiday individually, but significantly lower than the two combined.
