The State Expected to Join with Investments

When local authorities cannot manage on their own, the business community takes the initiative and takes the first step toward transforming Bucharest into a modern city. After all, the beginning is the hardest – at least in theory. Consequently, a smart city prototype has appeared in Tineretului Park, aiming to serve as an example for authorities interested in expanding this concept city-wide.

The imminent transformation of Bucharest into a smart city has been discussed for several years, but authorities still fail to complete sensible, conventional projects, such as building roads or simply paving them. Under these conditions, the business environment wanted to demonstrate that the projects of the future can also be set up quickly and efficiently, using one of the most important national resources: high-speed internet, for which we are envied by the entire world. Thus, in Tineretului Park, concepts such as smart parking, free Wi-Fi connections, smart lighting, and permanent surveillance have been implemented.

“This project serves as a model for local authorities, who can see how public spaces can be managed more efficiently and at lower costs. We have made the transition from concept to real plans and solutions that work in favor of Bucharest residents, who can relax in safer conditions when they are in the park,” explains Ovidiu Ghiman, Executive Commercial Director, Business Segment at Telekom Romania.

To expand this technology city-wide, the IoT – Internet of Things platform should be used, which allows the interconnection of all smart devices and sensors. This type of solution already exists in the portfolio of specialized companies in the field. Once these systems are implemented, Bucharest residents will never waste time looking for a parking spot or waiting in line to pay for parking again. An application installed on a phone or laptop will handle these things. Street lighting will be sensor-based, with light becoming more intense as passersby approach and economical when the street is empty. Traffic lights will communicate, traffic will be streamlined, public transport will be permanently monitored, and passengers will always know when the next bus is coming, for example. All these things are vital for a modern city.

“The greatest challenge of our time is the growing population combined with shrinking budgets. We are going through the largest wave of urban growth in history, and the trend is for the number of city dwellers to increase considerably by the year 2030. Resource efficiency is already a necessity. A Smart City is needed,” explains Ralf Nejedl, Senior Vice President B2B & ICT at Deutsche Telekom.

In a smart city, there is also a bike-sharing system, as well as mobile app control for machines that sell products or services. Any type of criminality is analyzed through special programs, and computers can automatically notify authorities when necessary. Surveillance cameras will be mounted on lighting poles, so there would be no areas outside the coverage radius. Electric and solar chargers would become commonplace. All these facilities would lead to a friendlier and healthier city.

According to the UN, in 2014, 3.9 billion people lived in urban areas. By 2050, however, this number could increase to 6.3 billion people, meaning over 66% of the planet’s population. These increases lead to the permanent expansion of cities, which develop to accommodate the growing number of residents. More and more cities with over 10 million inhabitants, called mega-cities, are appearing. A historic moment was in 2008 when, for the first time in human history, the number of city dwellers surpassed those in rural areas. The same is true in Romania. According to the last census, only 46% of the total stable population lives in villages and communes, while the number of city dwellers is constantly increasing.

Source: Imopedia/Media

Frequently Asked Questions

What features does the Smart City pilot project in Tineretului Park include?

The project includes smart parking solutions, free Wi-Fi connectivity, intelligent street lighting, and 24/7 video surveillance.

Why is the transition to a Smart City model necessary for Bucharest?

Rapid urban population growth requires more efficient resource management, cost reduction, and technology-driven solutions to handle traffic and public safety.

How does IoT technology benefit the average citizen in a smart city?

IoT enables real-time updates for public transport, automated parking payments via mobile apps, and improved safety through interconnected sensors and cameras.

The Capital, Modernized with Business Funding.
