800 Million EUR Investment in the Second Stage of Coastal Erosion Control and Beach Rehabilitation on the Southern Coast<\/p>\n

Gheorghe Boeru, president of the company that supervised the rehabilitation and expansion works of the beaches in Mamaia and Constanta, stated that this year, the European Union will approve the project for financing the second stage of coastal erosion control and rehabilitation of Romanian tourist beaches on the southern coast.<\/div>\n

The environmental project, submitted by the Dobrogea-Litoral Water Basin Administration (ABADL) to the Government for approval, provides for the co-financing, starting in 2017, of a total investment of approximately 800 million EUR. This investment will involve works to eliminate coastal erosion, stimulate sediment deposition, and beach nourishment over a coastline length of more than 36 km.<\/div>\n

This stage consists of the rehabilitation of 11 new lots, starting with the Periboinea and Edighiol areas, then the Mamaia Casino area, the beaches in Agigea, Eforie, Costinesti, Olimp, Venus, Neptun, Mangalia, 2 Mai and Vama Veche.<\/div>\n

At the end of the first stage of beach rehabilitation, completed in November 2016, ABADL managed to expand the beaches by 46 hectares through nourishment works carried out in five distinct areas of Mamaia and Constanta.<\/div>\n

„The sand surfaces were extended by widths of over 100 meters by pumping over 3,500,000 cubic meters of sand from the depths, along a total coastline length of over 7.3 km and the construction of protective breakwaters and submerged breakwaters made of acropodes. The project had a total value of 170,450,084 EUR, including VAT, of which 85.49% was non-reimbursable financing from the European Cohesion Fund and 14.51% from the state budget,” specified Gheorghe Boeru.<\/div>\n
