On November 24, the European Olympic Committee decided during the General Assembly held in Sochi to grant Romania the final approval to organize the 2013 Winter Edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF).<\/p>\n
The decision came as a result of the fact that the development of tourism and sports infrastructure in the Prahova Valley is in an advanced stage, and the mountain resorts are ready to host such an event.<\/p>\n
During the General Assembly, the Romanian delegation committed that by the end of October 2012, when the final monitoring visit from the European Olympic Committee will take place, it will complete the remaining works currently under execution.<\/p>\n
During the General Assembly, Patrick Joseph Hickey – President of the European Olympic Committee, Octavian Morariu – President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, and George Scripcaru – President of the EYOF 2013 Organizing Committee and Mayor of Brasov, signed the letters addressed to all European Olympic committees inviting them to begin preparations for the competition organized in Romania.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT) is investing approximately 400 million RON for the development of the tourism and sports infrastructure necessary for organizing EYOF 2013.<\/p>\n
Investments include the expansion of ski areas in the Prahova Valley with over 40 km of new slopes, the construction of an Olympic ski jump and annexes, the setup of two biathlon tracks for permanent winter-summer use, the construction of three new cable transport installations, the construction of two new ice rinks, equipping all slopes with artificial snowmaking systems, and the creation of a reservoir for snowmaking.<\/p>\n
