In comparison, the Hungarian and Polish markets recorded annual growth of 12.9% and 12.8%, respectively. The growth was driven by the expansion of low-cost carriers, the study further notes.

For the low-cost operator Wizz Air, the Romanian market is the second most important in Central and Eastern Europe, after Poland. The company maintained its leadership position, while the national carrier significantly lost market share over the last 2 years. Thus, Tarom reached a market share of 19.9% in 2016, down from 27.2% in 2014.

The number of passengers transported by Tarom last year remained stable, with a slight increase of 1%, and remains unaffected by the dynamic competition from the three major low-cost companies.

Romania is the only country in Southeast Europe that has its own low-cost operator. This is Blue Air, which operates flights from 7 Romanian airports and was the third-largest airline locally.

Ryanair officials stated they will transport 2.6 million passengers this year. And if Tarom does not lease two aircraft to replace the A310 models retired from the fleet last year, it will not be able to transport more passengers.

Tarom’s biggest problem at the moment is the removal of the two A310 aircraft from the fleet, which could fly to New York and Beijing. Recently, the company announced it is giving up international flights from Iasi airport precisely due to the lack of aircraft.

Source: Economica

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Tarom’s market share decrease?

Tarom’s market share dropped from 27.2% to 19.9% due to the aggressive expansion of low-cost carriers like Wizz Air and Blue Air in the Romanian market.

Which aviation markets saw the highest growth in 2016?

Bulgaria and Romania led the region with seat capacity growth rates of 25.4% and 21.6%, respectively.

What is Tarom’s primary operational challenge?

The retirement of two Airbus A310 aircraft has significantly limited the airline’s capacity, leading to the cancellation of international routes from regional airports.

Bulgaria and Romania were the fastest-growing markets in 2016 in terms of available seat capacity, according to OAG Analyser data cited in a study by SeeNews.
