Last autumn, the Cluj County Council received over EUR 5 million in EU funds to transform the castle into a cultural center and has now launched procedures by seeking a designer.

According to data provided then, the works should be completed in about 3 years, after which, for 5 years following project completion, Banffy Castle will be open for free visits.

During World War II, the castle was used as a military hospital. In 1944, the building was seriously damaged when retreating German troops attacked, looted, and set fire to the entire complex. All furniture, the well-known portrait gallery, and the library were destroyed.

During the communist regime, in a still-functional wing of the castle, the Bonțida Agricultural Production Cooperative was installed in the 1950s. Nationalization and the lack of maintenance for the buildings and park led to severe degradation, with villagers using the castle’s bricks as construction material.

The Cluj-Napoca Art Museum managed to save the statues from the once-baroque park, storing them within the institution, where they remain today. The castle continued to be used as a construction materials warehouse, and the park gradually turned into pasture, with trees becoming firewood.

After the fall of the communist regime, due to its state of decay, the World Monuments Watch included the castle on the List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World in 1999.

Source: Profit

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Banffy Castle located?

Banffy Castle is located in the commune of Bonțida, Cluj County, Romania.

Who is funding the restoration of the castle?

The restoration is funded by over EUR 5 million in European Union funds received by the Cluj County Council.

When will the restoration be completed?

The works are expected to be completed in approximately 3 years.

Banffy Castle in Bonțida, Cluj County, built by the Hungarian noble family Banffy, one of the longest-lived noble dynasties in Transylvania, is entering its first phase of restoration.
