The Romanian seaside is facing the most severe labor crisis of the last 28 years, with 99% of hotels and restaurants on the coast having a staff deficit of over 50% shortly before the summer season begins, claims Mohammad Murad, president of the Federation of Romanian Tourism Employers (FPTR).<\/p>\n
The lack of personnel on the Romanian coast is so significant that hoteliers can no longer find chambermaids even with a net salary of 500 EUR at three-star hotels, plus taxes, plus food, while a good cook will not accept a salary lower than 3,000 EUR, Murad specified.<\/p>\n
Anca Nedea, executive director of the Mamaia-Constanta Employers’ Organization, stated that last season, there were many cases where hotel chambermaids, in order to be retained, were paid 3,000 RON net per month, plus food and transport.<\/p>\n
In this context, Murad estimates that many businesses on the coast will close, and those that remain will have a low quality of services, which will primarily affect tourists, in context where domestic destinations have been more sought after in recent years.<\/p>\n
Both Murad and Nedea believe that the solution to resolving the crisis is for the state to urgently open the labor market, which currently only allows for the issuance of 10,000 work permits for foreigners.<\/p>\n
The FPTR official claims that the private sector does not rule out a fiscal strike if the state does not find quick solutions to resolve the crisis. <\/p>\n
