The InterContinental Hotel in Bucharest has decided to place 165 employees on technical unemployment until mid-April, hit by the negative impact of the coronavirus epidemic on tourism.<\/div>\n

Normally, out of the total 1,500 hotels in the country, 600 are open seasonally and 900 operate permanently. However, among those open permanently, 10% have already been closed due to the drastic decrease in the number of clients and canceled events, amid the coronavirus epidemic.<\/div>\n

According to FIHR estimates, another approximately 40% of the total number of active hotels are to be closed in the immediate period, representing another 360 units.<\/div>\n

Divided by types of layoffs, given state support for this field, estimates are that 50% of employees will choose the technical unemployment option (hoping that after a period of time, for example, three months, activity will return, even if at a slow pace), 25% would choose a combination of work and unemployment, and 25% will choose collective layoffs.<\/div>\n

In the first phase, all hotel units decided to go with the option of negotiations with employees, to use options for taking annual leave, requesting work from home to stay with children, or unpaid leave, with this option intended to cover the month of March. The second option for companies in the hotel industry is technical unemployment, but everyone is waiting to see if there will be support from the authorities, because if the burden of paying 75% of the salary falls on the company, it will be unable to pay due to the lack of income. The third option that some hoteliers are considering more and more seriously is to start the collective layoff process, but the fact that this process takes around 45 days, during which costs still fall on the company, prevents them from choosing it as a priority.<\/div>\n

Another proposal from tourism companies (but not yet validated by Romanian legislation) would be work-sharing, so that the employee works partially for the company, for which the company pays the net salary without taxes, and the state pays the difference up to 75% of the previous net salary.<\/div>\n
