{"id":118461,"date":"2020-06-14T18:00:23","date_gmt":"2020-06-14T15:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rhn.ro\/horeca-unemployment-to-rise-without-restaurant-reopening\/"},"modified":"2026-03-07T16:36:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T14:36:59","slug":"horeca-unemployment-to-rise-without-restaurant-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rhn.ro\/en\/horeca-unemployment-to-rise-without-restaurant-reopening\/","title":{"rendered":"HoReCa Unemployment to Rise Without Restaurant Reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Restaurants will be able to welcome customers indoors only after July 1, provided the number of COVID-19 infections does not increase significantly from day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 9, President Klaus Iohannis announced that the state of alert would be extended after June 15, with fewer restrictions, but with the continued mandatory use of protective masks in enclosed spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourism employer associations have requested the Government, through an open letter, for restaurants to enter the second phase of relaxation on June 15\u2014namely the reopening of interiors; otherwise, the estimated number of unemployed in HoReCa will rise from 30%, as currently estimated, to 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, the Romanian Restaurant Association (HORA) agreed with the Government for terraces to reopen on June 1, with the rest of the restaurants opening gradually every two weeks\u2014first 50% of the interior, and then fully indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document issued by HORA states that it is currently estimated that 30% of employees will lose their jobs, and if the reopening does not take place on June 15, the number of layoffs will increase toward 40%, which means approximately 150,000 unemployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full reopening of the 40,000 restaurants, hotels, bars, and cafes would lead to the market reentry of establishments that have not reopened at all, currently estimated at 27% of the total, or 10,800 spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, approximately 10,000 operators in the tourism industry have fully taken on the burden of rent, and restaurants in conflict with landlords intend to enter insolvency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HoReCa industry is estimated at EUR 6 billion, specifically EUR 4 billion in revenue related to restaurants and EUR 2 billion in revenue related to hotels. Amid the pandemic, the industry has lost 30% of its revenue, and the loss will increase exponentially, according to employer associations.
