The COVID-19 pandemic caused estimated losses of $320 billion to global tourism between January and May, according to a barometer published by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organization estimates that this is more than triple the losses recorded by international tourism during the 2009 global economic crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the analyzed period, the number of international tourists fell by 58% compared to the same period in 2019, representing at least 300 million tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite a slow restart of tourism, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, “the confidence index established by UNWTO shows historic lows,” the organization stated in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the main risks facing this sector, UNWTO cites the spread of the virus and the risk of new lockdowns, as well as the situation in China and the United States, which is at a standstill, given that these countries are usually major sources of tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the beginning of May, UNWTO estimated a 60-80% decrease in the number of international tourists in 2020 and losses of $910-$1,200 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n
