The European Commission announced the most innovative cities in the Union following a multi-stage competition that began on June 23, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first evaluation, only 12 cities were selected to enter the final. These were: Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Espoo (Finland), Ghent (Belgium), Groningen (Netherlands), Helsingborg (Sweden), Leeuwarden (Netherlands), Leuven (Belgium), Linz (Austria), Milan (Italy), Reykjavik (Iceland), Valencia (Spain), and Vienna (Austria).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the final stage, a high-level jury of independent experts interviewed and selected the six finalists after thorough interviews. Besides Cluj-Napoca, the list includes Vienna (Austria), Valencia (Spain), Espoo (Finland), Helsingborg (Suedia), and Leuven (Belgium).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funded by Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation program, the award recognizes excellent initiatives that position European cities as testing grounds for innovation. The finalist cities are not afraid of the major challenges they face and seek bottom-up solutions and activities that enable the development of vibrant innovation ecosystems around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alongside the six cities forming the innovation hexagon in the European Union, Cluj has already secured a prize of 100,000 EUR, offered to cities with runner-up status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Commission will announce the European Capital of Innovation 2020 and the five finalists on September 24, 2020, during an online awards ceremony at the European Research and Innovation Days (September 22-24, 2020), which also includes a 1 million EUR prize.<\/p>\n\n\n
