\u201cTinutul Buzaului\u201d\/\u201cBuzau Land\u201d is currently undergoing the final stage before becoming a UNESCO Global Geopark, the second in Romania after Hateg Country, recognized as a territory with natural and cultural values of international importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between September 15-19, two specialists from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will verify if the reality on the ground matches the file submitted to Paris in December 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mud volcanoes, salt domes, living fires, Ulmet concretions, cave settlements, and the red amber of Colti \u2013 the renowned sites of Buzau Land will be evaluated through the lens of the area’s geological and cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBuzau Land\u201d must meet 99 out of the 101 analyzed criteria to receive the UNESCO Geopark title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two specialists will analyze the Land’s impact on education, tourism, and the local economy, as well as on the protection of the area’s natural and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approximately one week after the visit to Romania concludes, the specialists will submit a joint report to the UNESCO Secretariat in Paris, France. The latter will analyze the report, along with two other reports prepared by a UNESCO commission and a commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) – based on the file submitted by the Buzau Land Association in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subsequently, the UNESCO Secretariat will submit a proposal for acceptance, deferral, or rejection to the UNESCO Geoparks board, which meets every year in May. Following the votes, the final decision will be communicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The experts’ visit represents the final stage of the project’s evaluation process, after which the project may receive Geopark status acceptance, a deferral of the title (receiving clear instructions for rectification, to be implemented and sent for UNESCO analysis within 1-2 years), or its definitive rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once the title is obtained, it must be maintained. Every 4 years, the territory will be re-evaluated and re-validated by two international specialists to verify progress in community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The management of the Geopark will be ensured by the Buzau Land Association and supported by its partners, the Buzau County Council and the University of Bucharest, a Scientific Council, and a Consultative Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, for Buzau Land to function as a UNESCO Geopark, it will have a multi-annual budget. Part of this budget will be provided by the Buzau County Council, and the other part from the Buzau Land Association’s funds. Sponsorships, donations, the redirection of 3.5% of income tax, and revenues from the sale of Buzau Land branded products will be added to the Geopark’s budget.<\/p>\n\n\n
