Hospitality industry operators warn that current developments in this sector represent a threat to the industry not only in the short term but over a medium-term horizon, and have issued an open letter with a series of proposals for the political class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new restrictions in effect since Monday will massively affect the hospitality industry and lead to a reduced level of activity, industry representatives claim, noting that a major problem is the lack of immediate financial compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Representatives of the Federation of the Hotel Industry in Romania (FIHR) emphasize that our country must also respect the European definition of the digital certificate, so that foreign tourists who come to us relying on testing rather than vaccination are allowed to stay in hotels or go to restaurants, museums, etc., and this should also apply to Romanian tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is known that the green certificate refers to people who are vaccinated, tested in the last 72\/48 hours, or recovered from the disease in the last 15-180 days. It represents an act of normalcy that if we allow green certificate holders to participate in organized events with capacity limits in cinemas, theaters, churches, etc., they should be allowed to do so in hotels under exactly the same conditions. We refer to conference-type events, workshops, and seminars organized for digital certificate holders and with certain space restrictions,” explains FPTR in the open letter addressed to the leaders of political parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They point out that the measures imposed by the authorities do not require a green certificate for entire categories of employees, considering the right (and need) to work; however, the fact that hotel accommodation is not permitted for them, even though they can travel for business purposes from one locality to another, represents exactly this violation of the right to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the cited source, the way communication was handled, “with different interpretations, errors, and corrections at 24-hour intervals,” brought great chaos to which many hospitality operators, as well as customers in hotels and restaurants, did not know how to react, resulting in the cancellation of reservations they had until clarifications arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second chapter of FPTR’s proposals targets the area of compensation with which the Romanian state came to support the hospitality industry, the most affected by the pandemic. It points out that, although numerous discussions have taken place with all state authorities, for the year 2020, the hospitality industry has not yet received anything concrete dedicated to operators in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, they express hope that holiday vouchers will be resumed in 2022, even if in a revised form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given that turnover is heavily affected in 2021 as well, with an estimated loss of about 70% of volumes in the fourth quarter of the year due to the pandemic, FIHR members consider it a “maximum urgency” for the state to provide support for hospitality industry operators.<\/p>\n\n\n
