Almost two years of the pandemic have passed, marked by numerous emergency ordinances, restrictions, and measures to stop the spread of the virus, but also many changes, plans, and strategies for continuous adaptation to the \u201dnew normal.\u201d<\/p>\n
This turbulent period continues to produce changes in more and more industries, and tourism and tourist behavior are no exception. The considerable increase in Romanians’ willingness to travel, the growing digitalization among tourism operators, and essential changes regarding consumer expectations and priorities for the coming years are among the most important trends identified in the Central and Eastern European region.<\/p>\n
More vacations than in the pre-pandemic period.<\/p>\n
Romanians plan a maximum of 4 vacations within the country and 2 vacations abroad.<\/p>\n
Despite the major damage caused by the coronavirus to the tourism industry, according to the most recent study conducted by Szallas Group, which includes the online hotel booking platform Travelminit.ro, and Nielsen IQ, industry players in the Central and Eastern European region are optimistic about the upcoming period.<\/p>\n
It is a moderate optimism, fueled by opinion polls conducted recently among tourists from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania. They have shown an increased willingness to travel, with statistics even foreshadowing an increase in international travel over the next 2-3 years.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, according to the study, 75% of Romanians want to travel more than in pre-pandemic times in the next 3-4 years to overseas destinations, with over 50% of respondents stating they want to go on vacation at least twice a year.<\/p>\n
An interesting detail, which may represent an opportunity for tourism industry players in Central and Eastern Europe, is that more than half of the surveyed tourists stated they intend to travel to at least one of the countries in the region, most often mentioning states such as Hungary, Croatia, and Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
The Szallas Group study also highlights that almost unanimously, Romanian tourists want to continue benefiting from the possibility of canceling their trip for free even in the coming period, after we leave the pandemic behind.<\/p>\n
97% of participants stated they will continue to value hygiene and distancing measures applied in the accommodation units where they plan to spend their vacation, and 95% would prefer to be able to change their travel dates without paying additional costs.<\/p>\n
In short, the travel conditions brought to the forefront by the pandemic, such as flexible vacations and increased attention to hygiene and social distancing rules, remain the keywords when talking about the expectations of Romanian travelers in 2022.<\/p>\n
In terms of the essential aspects that tourists consider when booking accommodation for vacations, these are the location of the accommodation (distance from the central area, from means of transport, and from the tourist attractions they are interested in), the price per night of accommodation, and the reviews of other guests who previously stayed at the location.<\/p>\n
