In such a context, Heinz Zangerl, TUI Group Director for Eastern Europe, visited Bucharest.

Zangerl pointed out that, at the CEE level, tourism looks promising, and figures are approaching 2019 levels.

„We see significant growth since the beginning of the year in the CEE region countries, which is still maintaining. We are close to the 2018-2019 level. If demand continues at this pace, we will soon reach the figures recorded before the pandemic. This is the group’s main plan. We do not yet know how the war in Ukraine will affect us,” stated Heinz Zangerl.

The German group’s local franchise is TUI TravelCenter, and the company’s plan for Romania is to reach a network of 45 agencies in the next 5 years, with Bucharest set to concentrate most of the units.

Stefan Joos, General Manager of TUI TravelCenter, stated that at this moment the company has 5 agencies open, and in April they will reach 12 agencies. „We will add another 10 agencies in 2023. We want to have about 45 agencies open in the next 5 years. We will not skimp on investments. We will invest in technology and look for B2B and B2C solutions, which can start from a few tens of thousands of euros up to several hundred thousand euros. For this year alone, we have planned investments of several million euros, of which 300,000 EUR are just for agency openings and technology,” stated Stefan Joos.

In Romania, TUI will operate in Iasi, Cluj, Timisoara, Targu Mures, Sibiu, Oradea, and Bucharest, with plans to expand to other cities in the future.

For 2022, TUI TravelCenter targets sales of 10 million EUR, but reaching the target proposed at the beginning of the year depends on the evolution of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which could disrupt the travel agency’s plans.

Those who choose to travel will lean towards safer destinations, far from the military conflict at the border. Demand is high for exotic destinations such as Zanzibar, Africa, Tanzania, or the Dominican Republic.

TUI, the world’s largest tourism operator, had exited the Romanian market after Dragos Anastasiu sold the travel agency chain, which operated under the TUI brand, to Dertour, but has returned to the local market as a franchise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TUI’s expansion plan in Romania?

TUI TravelCenter aims to open 45 agencies over the next 5 years, focusing on major cities like Bucharest, Cluj, and Iasi.

Who is the local franchise partner for TUI?

TUI TravelCenter is the local franchise operator representing the TUI brand in Romania.

Which destinations are currently in high demand?

Travelers are currently favoring safe exotic destinations such as Zanzibar, Tanzania, and the Dominican Republic.

TUI Group Returns to the Romanian Market TUI Group, the world’s largest tourism group, signals that the tourism industry has frozen for the moment, affected by the uncertainty generated by the war in Ukraine, but will recover abruptly and very quickly, with a V-shaped trajectory, if the war ends.
