Furthermore, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is now the successor to the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition.<\/p>\n<p>To compete for the 2024 titles, cities must demonstrate their innovative tourism practices and submit applications using an online form. Applications will first be evaluated by a panel of independent experts. In the second stage, shortlisted cities will be asked to present their city&#8217;s candidacy to the European jury. The European jury will select two winners, &#8220;European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024&#8221; and &#8220;European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2024,&#8221; who will be announced in November \u2013 December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Both competitions are open to cities in the EU, as well as non-EU countries participating in the COSME and Single Market programs.<\/p>\n<p>The European Capital of Smart Tourism competition has a record of success. The 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism is the fifth edition of the competition. Pafos and Seville are the 2023 capitals, Bordeaux and Valencia were selected as 2022 capitals, Gothenburg and Malaga were 2020 capitals, and Helsinki and Lyon won the inaugural competition and jointly held the 2019 titles.<\/p>\n<p>European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism \u2013 Green leads the way<\/p>\n<p>The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is the successor to the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition, which was first introduced by the European Commission in 2007 to reward non-traditional sustainable tourism destinations in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is based on the principle of promoting sustainable tourism development in smaller destinations, bringing value to the economy, the planet, and people.
